After a couple of days of driving in the driving rain we finally made it our first real stop in Brazil – the twin towns of Canela and Gramado. Both towns are kind of tacky and very touristy. The town centres are ‘Bavarian style’ chalets and lots of chocolate shops, mainly all two brands just with lots of outlets including huge themed shops on the edges of both towns. It’s not hard to guess what time of year we visited and tacky and fake as the towns felt it was just so different from anywhere in South America we,decided been so far. Canela has huge stuffed bunnies in elaborate displays throughout the town, including several ones where you could pose, Aiden wasn’t keen to join me!!
If Canela seemed a little bit more ‘done up’ for the children Gramola had more German style chalets and the Easter decorations were a bit less aimed at children with more serious displays. We spent a couple of days in the drizzle wandering round these fake little villages, and at the campsite instead of camping we managed to negotiate the same price for a little shed with a bed inside – luxury! Although the main luxury of Brazil so far has been the food and getting to eat something other than chicken and chips which has been our staple food for the last 3 months!
